Support Us

The Florence Nightingale Foundation® is a Registered Charity (no. 229229).

For almost a century, we have supported the pioneers and trailblazers who have followed in Florence’s footsteps.

Today, we are reaching over 200,000 nurses and midwives across the UK.

They are the people who care for us and our loved ones in hospitals, community settings, in homes and, in the case of military nurses, around the world, at the most important moments.

Now more than ever, because of the challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses and the immense pressures on the wellbeing of those on frontlines and across all services, it is vital that we continue to support and develop our nursing and midwifery leaders – the Nightingales of today.

Together we can achieve a healthier world.

“For us who Nurse, our Nursing is a thing, which, unless in it we are making progress every year, every month, every week, take my word for it we are going back.”

Florence Nightingale, 1872

How you can make a difference

Support Scholars

We will all need the support of nurses at some point in our lives.

At the Florence Nightingale Foundation®, we exist to ensure that nurses and midwives have had the best opportunities for development, so that they can deliver the best care.

We are proud that approximately four out of every five of our scholars go on to achieve a promotion within two years of completing a Florence Nightingale Foundation® programme.

Our scholarships enable nurses and midwives to lead change and improvements in health and care as well as to shape policy and practice, just as Florence did.

By supporting our scholars, you will improve the lives of passionate, talented nurses and midwives – as well as the lives of patients, today and in the future.

“How little can be done under the spirit of fear.”

Support Nightingale Frontline

Right now, our nurses and midwives are facing immense pressures.

As well as providing leadership development support, we are here for nurses and midwives when they need us the most.

In April 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nightingale Frontline® was launched to provide an online, peer support service for nurses and midwives across the UK.

At that time, our goal was to provide emotional wellbeing support for all nurses and midwives as they battled the unprecedented demands of the pandemic on a daily basis.

Two years on and the service remains in very high demand as our nurses and midwives continue to manage the direct and indirect effects of the pandemic across health and social care.

Nightingale Frontline® remains a safe space for nurses and midwives to come together to share experiences with their peers and to offer each other support and advice while being guided by expert facilitators. Sessions are available from 8am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday every week of the year.

To date we have supported over 3,000 participants across the health, social care and the voluntary sector.

With your support we can reach more nurses and midwives so that they can continue to maintain courage beyond the pandemic.

"The session was incredibly useful to listen to the challenges that colleagues across the country are facing. The small size of the group was especially appealing to me and I felt that I was able to contribute effectively. The group was very balanced and supportive and the facilitator was reassuringly experienced and sensitive to the people in the group, skilfully drawing out the primary issues and supporting solutions."

How you can support us

In late 1855 the Nightingale Fund was established to recognise Florence’s work in the Crimea during wartime. £44,039, equivalent to almost £3m today, was raised through public subscriptions, concerts and other fundraising activities, and soldiers who had fought in the war gave a day’s pay.

Since we were established as a registered charity in 1929, voluntary support and philanthropy have been key to enabling us to honour Florence’s legacy.

Currently, we need to raise ca. £2.5m each year to maintain our programmes and services for nurses and midwives across the UK.

Without our partners, alumni, members and supporters, we would not be able to continue our pioneering work.

There are many ways in which you can help us to maintain, and grow, our support for nurses and midwives on the frontline and across all services today.

Every donation to FNF enables us to support the nurses and midwives who are working hard up and down the country each day to do their best for their patients and the people they support.

Right now, nurses and midwives across the UK and the world are facing immense pressures.

We have to attract more people into the nursing and midwifery professions, ensure that they are supported, and help them to flourish as leaders if we are to avoid a workforce crisis – and, most of all, to achieve a healthier world.

You can read more about the impact donations and sponsorship make to our nurses and midwives on our impact page.

Making a donation in someone’s memory is a meaningful and lasting way to remember that person.

There are a number of ways in which you can make a donation in memory of someone special.

Donate in lieu of flowers

If you have lost a loved one, you might find it helpful to ask people to make a donation in their memory at the funeral, rather than buy flowers.

Many funeral directors will be able to arrange a collection for you and forward the donations directly to us. When all of your gifts have been received, we will let you know who has donated and the total amount raised in memory of your loved one.

Make a regular donation to remember someone special

You can mark a special date or remember a special person with a regular donation to the Foundation. If you choose to, you can receive our newsletter and updates to let you know how your donation is helping.

Set up a tribute page

An online tribute page can be a place to remember someone special, share thoughts and stories with friends and family, and fundraise in their memory. There are several ways to set up a page in aid of the Florence Nightingale Foundation®. For example, you can use or there is the memorial website charity:

After providing for your loved ones, please consider leaving a gift to The Florence Nightingale Foundation®.

Leaving a gift in your Will means that nurses and midwives will be able to access the most highly sought-after leadership training in the UK; that we can be here for our nurses and midwives when they need us most via our unique Nightingale Frontline® service; and that we can continue to pioneer the latest changes in health and care, influencing policy and practice, just as Florence did.

We understand that leaving a gift in your Will is an incredibly personal and important decision.

You can read more about the impact donations can make to our nurses and midwives on our impact page.

There are so many ways you can fundraise to support the Florence Nightingale Foundation® and in doing so help us to support nurses and midwives around the UK.

For instance, you could organise a bake sale, coffee morning, dress-down day or get involved by organising your own event such as a quiz night, garden party or sponsored run, walk or cycle. You could take part in one of the amazing challenge events that happen all over the country, or even the world if you’re feeling very ambitious!
