The Florence Nightingale Foundation® is a Registered Charity (no. 229229).
For almost a century, we have supported the pioneers and trailblazers who have followed in Florence’s footsteps.
Today, we are reaching over 200,000 nurses and midwives across the UK.
They are the people who care for us and our loved ones in hospitals, community settings, in homes and, in the case of military nurses, around the world, at the most important moments.
Now more than ever, because of the challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses and the immense pressures on the wellbeing of those on frontlines and across all services, it is vital that we continue to support and develop our nursing and midwifery leaders – the Nightingales of today.
Together we can achieve a healthier world.
“For us who Nurse, our Nursing is a thing, which, unless in it we are making progress every year, every month, every week, take my word for it we are going back.”
Florence Nightingale, 1872
How you can make a difference
We will all need the support of nurses at some point in our lives.
At the Florence Nightingale Foundation®, we exist to ensure that nurses and midwives have had the best opportunities for development, so that they can deliver the best care.
We are proud that approximately four out of every five of our scholars go on to achieve a promotion within two years of completing a Florence Nightingale Foundation® programme.
Our scholarships enable nurses and midwives to lead change and improvements in health and care as well as to shape policy and practice, just as Florence did.
By supporting our scholars, you will improve the lives of passionate, talented nurses and midwives – as well as the lives of patients, today and in the future.
“How little can be done under the spirit of fear.”
Support Nightingale Frontline
Right now, our nurses and midwives are facing immense pressures.
As well as providing leadership development support, we are here for nurses and midwives when they need us the most.
In April 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nightingale Frontline® was launched to provide an online, peer support service for nurses and midwives across the UK.
At that time, our goal was to provide emotional wellbeing support for all nurses and midwives as they battled the unprecedented demands of the pandemic on a daily basis.
Two years on and the service remains in very high demand as our nurses and midwives continue to manage the direct and indirect effects of the pandemic across health and social care.
Nightingale Frontline® remains a safe space for nurses and midwives to come together to share experiences with their peers and to offer each other support and advice while being guided by expert facilitators. Sessions are available from 8am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday every week of the year.
To date we have supported over 3,000 participants across the health, social care and the voluntary sector.
With your support we can reach more nurses and midwives so that they can continue to maintain courage beyond the pandemic.
How you can support us
In late 1855 the Nightingale Fund was established to recognise Florence’s work in the Crimea during wartime. £44,039, equivalent to almost £3m today, was raised through public subscriptions, concerts and other fundraising activities, and soldiers who had fought in the war gave a day’s pay.
Since we were established as a registered charity in 1929, voluntary support and philanthropy have been key to enabling us to honour Florence’s legacy.
Currently, we need to raise ca. £2.5m each year to maintain our programmes and services for nurses and midwives across the UK.
Without our partners, alumni, members and supporters, we would not be able to continue our pioneering work.
There are many ways in which you can help us to maintain, and grow, our support for nurses and midwives on the frontline and across all services today.
