Nurses and midwives recognised in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours

The Platinum Jubilee weekend was a truly joyous celebration, and along with Paddington enjoying tea at Buckingham Palace, our absolute highlight was the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours. We were thrilled that so many exceptional nurses and midwives were honoured, and proud beyond belief to see Florence Nightingale Foundation scholars, alumni, members, mentors and supporters recognised.
Chief Nursing Officer for England Ruth May was made a dame for services to nursing, midwifery and the NHS, an accolade which was so well deserved. Ruth, a FNF scholar, supporter and mentor, said, “I am proud to receive this award and I do so on behalf of the nursing and midwifery professions who use their expertise to care for us throughout every stage of our lives in hospitals, in our homes and in the community each and every day.”
It was marvellous to see Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives Gill Walton receive a CBE. “I am so proud to receive the award on behalf of midwives and maternity support workers,” said Gill.
We were also so pleased for Deputy Chief Nurse for Health Education England and FNF mentor and supporter, Liz Fenton, who was made an OBE for services to the nursing profession.
Wonderful, too, was the MBE for Deputy Director for Nursing Professional Development at NHS England and NHS Improvement Angela Knight Jackson. Angela, a FNF scholar and member, said, “As a first-generation descendent of Windrush, I stand on the shoulders of giants. For 40 years I’ve had an amazing journey working as a clinician, in academia and as senior leader, and would like to thank my incredible colleagues past and present who have supported me.”
Heartfelt congratulations to FNF Academy Advisory Board Chair and supporter Jacqui Reilly, Professor of Infection Prevention and Control at Glasgow Caledonian University, who received a CBE for services to Healthcare and Public Health. Also, a huge bravo to FNF member Stephanie Lawrence, Executive Director for Nursing and Allied Health Professionals at Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, who received a MBE for services to district nursing.
