The Florence Nightingale Foundation, with the Burdett Trust for Nursing, are pleased to offer an interactive online leadership programme to all Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives (IENMs) working in the United Kingdom.
This exciting opportunity will be open to all IENMs practicing in the UK, whether in the NHS, social care or private healthcare. Whether you have been working here for some time or are new to the UK health care setting but would like to enhance your leadership skills, this programme is recommended for you.
You will get the chance to develop your own authentic leadership style and to enhance your skills; enabling you to improve your service and boost your career opportunities.
By completing the programme you join our growing community of nurse and midwifery leaders who are following in Florence’s footsteps and making a difference for patients and communities.
The programme offers a supportive learning space, developed in collaboration with subject experts and fellow IENMs who themselves have forged exciting careers in the UK.

Question: Are there any fees or financial obligations associated with this programme?
Answer: No, this course is fully funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing and you are not expected to pay any fees to take this programme.
Question: I am currently living in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland rather than England. Am I eligible?
Answer: Yes, we are accepting applications from anywhere in the UK. We are not accepting applications from anywhere outside of the UK.
Question: I don’t work for the NHS, can I apply?
Answer: Yes – Our places are funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing. Any IENM practicing as a registered nurse or midwife in the UK can apply.
Question: I am in the middle of my OSCE exam process or have not yet received my results. Am I eligible?
Answer: Yes. We will allow any IENM in the process of registering with the NMC to take part, even if you have not yet completed your OSCE, as long as you are currently working in the UK. You must provide evidence of your PIN application and identify your current employer.
It is your decision whether you wish to undertake this programme and whether you can balance the time commitment required alongside your work and your preparation for your OSCEs and registration.
Question: I have not yet received my NMC pin. Am I still eligible?
Answer: Yes, please include a screenshot or other evidence of your NMC pin application with your application to the programme.
It is your decision whether you wish to undertake this programme and whether you can balance the time commitment required alongside your work and your preparation for your OSCEs and registration.
Question: Will this course contribute to CPD hours and if so how many?
Answer: The NMC requirement for CPD for revalidation is:
‘You must have undertaken 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to your scope of practice in the three year period since your registration was last renewed, or you joined the register.
Of those 35 hours of CPD, at least 20 must have included participatory learning.’
They state – ‘It’s important to remember that we don’t prescribe any particular type of CPD; we leave it up to you to decide what activity is most useful for your development as a professional’
To meet the participatory learning requirement, you simply have to undertake activity that involves interaction with one or more other professionals. This can be in a physical environment or a virtual one – you don’t have to be in the same room as the people you undertake the activity with.’
Therefore, you can count the hours from this programme as self directed learning towards your CPD requirements. Our interactive webinars involve interaction with other professionals, so you can count the hours attending these webinars as ‘participatory’ hours. You will receive a certificate at the end of the programme.
Question: Will this course consist of any face to face elements?
Answer: No, this course is entirely online. The majority is e-learning completed at your own pace from our website. There are webinars at the end of each module that we welcome you to attend. These will be recorded for you to watch back at a later date if you are not available at those times.
Question: What does the course content consist of?
Answer: We anticipate the online materials you need to complete will take between 30-40 hours of self-directed study over 8 months.
Each module will be released one at a time and you will have 1 or 2 months to complete the material depending on the module.
Our e-Learning has end of chapter quizzes but there are no long form essays or projects to complete.
At the end of each module, there will be an interactive webinar for 1 and a half hours which you are expected to attend. These will be recorded so if you are at work or cannot attend you can catch up later.
There will be additional optional opportunities for you to reflect or undertake extra activities during the programme if you would like to learn more.
