Tom Bonham Carter has worked in board effectiveness and governance since 2005. He founded The Effective Board LLP in 2017, continuing the work he began in 2006 when he co founded Armstrong Bonham Carter.
He has undertaken board reviews for FTSE 100, FTSE 250, FTSE Smaller Companies, and private organisations across a wide range of sectors. He has also advised a number of charities on governance matters. He is an accredited Belbin Team Role Practitioner.
Tom previously served as a Trustee and Chair of the Council of the Nightingale Fund, which provided financial support for nurses, midwives and community public health nurses undertaking further education. The Nightingale Fund merged with the Florence Nightingale Foundation in 2023.
Alongside his governance work, Tom has extensive leadership experience in the investment management industry. He began his career as a UK equities fund manager with BZW Investment Management before moving to Asia in 1994 to lead one of Thailand’s first mutual fund companies. He later became Chief Executive of Barclays Global Investors in Hong Kong, then one of the region’s largest institutional investment managers. On returning to the UK, he led the discretionary fund management business of Barclays Stockbrokers from 1998 to 2004.
Before entering investment management, Tom attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served with the Irish Guards, mainly in Germany. He holds an MA in Economics from Magdalene College, Cambridge.
