This Remember a Charity Week 8-14 September, will you consider leaving a gift in your Will to the Florence Nightingale Foundation? A legacy that will empower the next generation of global nursing and midwifery leaders.

We are all part of a global health community, yet nurses and midwives everywhere continue to face immense pressures, affecting the quality of care they work so hard to deliver.

The latest State of the World’s Nursing report revealed a global shortage of 5.8 million nurses. It highlights a widening gap between high and low-income countries and an urgent need for investment in nursing and midwifery leadership worldwide.

We must act now to ensure nurses and midwives are supported to lead change, shape policy, and build sustainable health systems. We must do more to increase their representation and influence in senior health and academic roles, and invest in those who will lead the future of care.

Leaders like Nolyne Boit, a nurse from Homa Bay County, Kenya, who graduated from our Global Health Partnership-funded leadership programme. Delivered in collaboration with the Nursing Council of Kenya, this 10-month programme equipped Nolyne with the skills and confidence to lead a quality improvement project that increased childhood immunisation rates in her community from 56% to 98%.

I’ve learnt so many things through this journey around the complexity of health systems in the context of leadership, communication and continuous improvement. This has made me more equipped to tackle future challenge, with a deeper understanding of the dynamic between leadership, community engagement and healthcare delivery.

I have left the Florence Nightingale Foundation a gift in my Will to ensure that nurses around the world are supported to achieve their potential and to improve the health of the people of their country.
