We are excited to share that we are starting a new leadership programme for nurses and midwives in Malawi.  The programme will strengthen the country’s health sector through the delivery of a leadership programme for mid-level nurses and midwives across the country.

A group of eight people standing in a row outside. There is a building in the background and there is a pull up banner behind them saying Global Health Worksforce Programme, Malawi.

Image above shows representatives of the project team at the launch event in Lilongwe on 15 April. To include Dr Samson Mndolo (Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Health for Malawi), Madam Judith Chirembo, (Registrar of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi), Emily Gama (MoH Malawi), Dr Edna Tallam (representing NCK and FNF) and Margaret Caffrey (Global Health Partnerships).

Building on the impact and learning from our recently concluded programme in Kenya, we have been awarded another global health workforce grant through the Global Health Partnership (formerly THET). We will be working in partnership with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi, as well as the Ministry of Health Malawi and the Nursing Council of Kenya.

The Malawi Ministry of Health (Nursing and Midwifery Directorate) and the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi (NMCM) have identified gaps in leadership and management skills among nurses and midwives working in mid-level leadership roles in Malawi. Our leadership development programme will improve skills and confidence of this cadre, including supporting nurses and midwives to develop quality improvement projects for their service areas.. Malawi recognises leadership capacity as central to achieving national strategic ambitions for universal health coverage and improving standards and outcomes.

Our partnership will work with a collaboration of organisations and stakeholders in Malawi and the UK to deliver this leadership programme. The National Director for Nursing and Midwifery Services and her deputy have played a valuable role in facilitating stakeholder dialogue and aligning the proposed project with Malawi’s strategic priorities for nursing and midwifery leadership. Recognising the integral position of CHAM and the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives for Malawi within the nation’s health system, leaders of these organisations have been involved in planning the proposal and have pledged their support as additional partners.

Look out for updates as the programme progresses.
