Captain Jules Després is a Nursing Officer in the Royal Navy with over 25 years of experience A dedicated, empathetic and charismatic leader, he is innovative, committed to continuous improvement, and seeks to drive change collaboratively and harmoniously He is passionate about people and believes by enthusing them, generating the space for creativity, supporting them, and enabling them to be part of shaping the future, they will deliver the highest levels of care to those who need it most, when they least expect it, wherever they are.
Having completed a range of appointments across Royal Navy and Joint organisations delivering clinical services, operational support, research, policy, capability development, J 1 Personnel, and Principal Staff Officer and Chief of Staff roles he has amassed a wealth of experience from maritime, land, and in particular the Joint environment and across a plethora of medical and non-medical roles.
He has operated as an advanced clinical practitioner in emergency and pre hospital medicine delivering care on maritime and land operations with UK and NATO military forces been the Healthcare Assurance Officer for UK military operations around the globe the Speciality Advisor on pre hospital care to the Head of Navy Healthcare and the Senior Nursing Officer to the Maritime Deployed Hospital Group. His achievements include developing and implementing the first PJHQ J 4 Medical Handbook for Joint Operations in 2011 now on its 3rd Edition as Chief of Staff to the Medical Director he led the development and instigation of the Defence Specialist Advisor role in 2013 in recognition of the broader role nurses and allied healthcare professionals play in leading and developing clinical operational capability at Defence level and as Chief of Staff to the Royal Navy’s Director People and Training, he was instrumental in developing the Navy’s People Operating Model and leading the transformation of the Royal Navy’s People Directorate and Function. He was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross in the Operational Honours List in 2003 and a 4 Commendation from Commander Joint Forces Command for exemplary service and exceptional leadership at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in 2017 In 2023 h e was appointed a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, and a Trustee of the Florence Nightingale Foundation.
Originally from Guernsey, he now lives in Rugby with his fiancée Tim, a Civil Servant, where they like to go walking and spending time with family and friends.
