We want to find out more about expectations and experiences of preceptorship across the UK, and advocate for change where needed.
Preceptorship helps ensure that newly registered nurses and midwives are equipped to deliver safe, competent care, it promotes professional growth, critical thinking and teamwork. A positive experience helps reduce stress and turnover among newly registered nurses and midwives by providing support and fostering a sense of belonging. Ultimately, quality preceptorship contributes to better outcomes for patients and service users and a stronger health and care workforce.
However not every newly registered nurse or midwife has a good experience of preceptorship. And not all preceptors are supported with the right skills or resources to do their best.
Please complete our anonymous survey to help improve preceptorship if you are:
- A student nurse or midwife.
- An early career nurse or midwife (defined as all those who have joined the NMC register in the past 5 years – please note that we are counting internationally educated registrants in this group too if they joined in the past 5 years, regardless of when they initially qualified overseas).
- A preceptor, preceptor lead or preceptor champion.
There are some targeted questions for each of the above groups so you will be able to share your feedback in a very focused way.
The findings will build on the previous two surveys we have run in partnership with the Nursing Times and UNISON. Our campaign in 2021-22 directly contributed to the development and/or improvement of the 4 Country National preceptorship frameworks. The January 2024 feedback showed that encouraging progress had been made since the initial survey but more still needs to be done.
This new survey will ensure we can continue to benchmark the experiences of preceptees and also – for the first time – explore the needs and experiences of preceptors. The findings will inform how FNF will support the professional development of preceptors in our work moving forward.
The survey closes on Tuesday 28 January 2025.
Thank you in advance for inputting into this work, please do share the survey link with your teams, colleagues and networks so that we can reach as far and wide as possible.
