Calvin Lightbody

Calvin Lightbody is a senior Emergency Physician and an accredited Coach with the Association for Coaching. He has 24 years of experience working in the NHS and has been an A&E Consultant in Lanarkshire, Scotland since 2009.

Calvin trained as a Peer Supporter in 2020 to help staff who were struggling with the effects of the pandemic and the strain of lockdown. He subsequently decided to train as a Professional Coach and gained his Advanced Certificate in Coaching Practice in 2021. Since then he has coached a number of mostly senior NHS staff including managers, Charge Nurses, AHPs and psychologists. His clients have benefited from help with problems such as feeling stuck in their career, burnout, lack of confidence, difficult colleagues and wellness related issues.

His approach to coaching is a holistic one, acknowledging that our career plans, home circumstances, social outlook and overall health are all intertwined. Calvin now blends part-time A&E work with running his own coaching business.

At work, he has a specialist interest around Advanced Care Planning for vulnerable patients, especially those nearing the end of life. His interest here also led to the making and hosting of his own podcast series called “Talking Mortality”. He has spoken at a number of national conferences on the subject of Treatment Escalation Planning and published research on it. He continues to train clinical staff in the communication skills needed for this area.
