Empowering Sustainable Leaders – residential programme

A sustainability training course for senior nurses and midwives

Our unique new leadership development programme is for senior nurses and midwives with an interest in or responsibility for the sustainability agenda.

The three-day residential programme, in a remarkable setting in Cornwall, offers an immersive learning experience to develop leadership identity, capacity, and capability and to take sustainable change back to your organisation. Delegates will connect with nature and leave with the tools to influence and transform the sustainability agenda in their work setting, as well as a renewed sense of clarity, balance and motivation.

Participants in our leadership programmes report the “life changing” leadership experience and its professional and personal impact. They feedback about feeling better able to influence improvements in patient care and health outcomes. The course can be funded using your organisation’s CPD budget.

Participants will also join the FNF alumni community and receive ongoing networking and leadership development opportunities through events, webinars, media engagement and policy thought leadership.

Location

  • You will be staying at the Cabilla retreat, Cornwall, in your very own private ‘Koyt’ cabin. Cabilla is situated deep within the heart of Bodmin Moor, the UK’s first true dark sky environment within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You will have exclusive use of this unique retreat, home to an extremely rare ancient temperate rainforest which hosts a diverse range of plant, fungi and animal species.
  • Described as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, the Eden Project is a dramatic global garden, a gateway into the relationships between plants and people, and a fascinating insight into the story of our connection to nature.

Programme Structure

The Leadership programme is fully-catered and residental over three days:

Day 1

11am Arrival and Welcome to Cabilla

Framing of the programme with a walk around the only temperate rainforest in the UK, allowing time to regenerate and reconnect.

Afternoon:

Understanding Self: Session on self-awareness, Emotional intelligence (EQ) and a Myer Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment to explore how personality preference influences personal leadership styles and how awareness can enable the promotion of high performing teams.

Evening:

Tour of the Beaver hide.

Day 2: Regenerative Leadership

Led by the Eden Project facilitators

With a focus on personal impact and influence, this will enable you to reconnect with self to have influence and lead sustainability change in your organisation. T

Taking inspiration from Eden founder Tim Smit, and other experts in the field of leadership, this programme takes you on an immersive learning journey through which you will gain clarity over purpose, explore uncertainty and complexity, and understand your personal agency in a rapidly changing world.

Together with change agents from a diverse range of sectors, you’ll be given permission to bring the most authentic version of yourself to whatever your current project is, to inspire others, and to effect real change within your spheres of influence. You will not find the usual tools and trappings of leadership courses on The Nature of Leadership. Instead, you’ll find a container of ideas and practices rooted in experiential learning. 

The day includes a nature walk and considering how to put learning into practice.  

Evening:

Immersive experience and dinner in a tropical rainforest at the Eden project.

Day 3: Personal Impact and Influence

Led by RADA Business

This session will take a practical approach to support participants to develop themselves to have influence and lead change: to upskill the ‘change-makers’. Facilitators will lead the group to regenerate individual’s self-belief; passion; ability to lead effectively and  commitment to purpose. The session will build confidence, gravitas, resilience and behavioural flexibility.

The day will end with a closing session to identify concrete actions to lead regenerative change.

Finish around 4pm. 

Cost

The three-day fully catered residential programme will cost £3,000 per delegate.

Places can be funded by the employer using CPD funding or self-funded by the individual. If your application is successful then payment will be required before starting the programme.

Please note that you will need to fund your own transport costs to the venue. Once there, all food and accommodation is included.

Lucy BrownDirector of Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Development  Lucy joined FNF in June 2021 and has overall responsibility for the delivery of the educational workstreams including the Scholarship and Leadership programmes, Online courses and the Nightingale Frontline service. Lucy’s vision for FNF is to continue to deliver visionary and transformational leadership opportunities to continually raise the nursing and midwifery voice.

Merlin Hanbury-Tenison – founder of Cabilla and Trustee and Cornwall Wildlife Trust Merlin grew up at Cabilla. He is passionate about helping guests to understand the incredible biodiversity and vibrancy of the forests in the valley.  After a career in the military and a number of years working in London and abroad he is the driving force behind Cabilla’s restoration journey.

Richard Good (Eden Project) Richard is a coach and facilitator who brings 30 years of experience designing and delivering transformational experiences for individuals and groups at all levels of an organisation. His practice has evolved from training with Earth Wisdom Teachers people and combining knowledge from eastern and western philosophies.

Pam Horton (Eden Project) Pam has a background in environmental education and conservation, and extensive experience designing and delivering the Eden Project’s experiential learning programmes, Pam has a passion for helping people learn from nature. She believes that engaging the head and the heart is key to motivating people to embrace change.

Kate Walker-Miles (RADA) Kate has been a coach at RADA Business for over 15 years.  She is a successful RADA-trained actor with a BA in Psychology from Oxford University and 8 years of hands on work as a Television Producer; Presenter and Scriptwriter.

Application Process

What you will need to demonstrate on your application form:

  • How you will use the programme to work with others, learn from, and share experiences
  • How the programme will support your personal development plan (PDP)
  • How you will use the experience to improve patient and health outcomes
  • Your aspirations to develop as a leader
  • Support from your line manager to enable you to attend all learning sessions/opportunities as part of this programme (they need to complete the Sponsor form below)

You are required to upload the following information:

  • Personal, employment and education information
  • A copy of your Professional registration documentation
  • An electronic photo of yourself (head and shoulders in high resolution)
  • A completed sponsor form (completed by your line manager) with authorisation to join the programme (link below)
