Ensure a Culture of Safety

The aim of this programme is to equip nurses and midwives with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to establish, nurture, and maintain a robust culture of safety within their teams / organisations.

Fostering a culture of safety in healthcare relies on cultivating authentic leaders who champion psychological well-being, prioritise employee welfare, and foster an environment where concerns and issues are openly discussed and effectively addressed throughout all levels of leadership. Leaders are responsible for not only achieving goals but also nurturing an environment where individuals can thrive and grow

The ‘Leading, Creating, and Sustaining Safe Cultures of Care’ programme underscores the significance of effective leadership in a specific context: the creation of safe and caring cultures within organisations. This programme acknowledges that safety, well-being, and a supportive work environment are essential for the success and satisfaction of employees, learners, and the organisation. Patient and service users recognise that leaders play a pivotal role in shaping and sustaining such cultures.

Overall Objectives

  • Recognise the critical role of leadership in promoting and maintaining a culture of safety.
  • Acquire skills to effectively lead safety initiatives, including communication, decision-making, and team building
  • Learn how to foster a blame-free environment that encourages reporting of errors and near misses.
  • Understand how to emphasize learning from errors to drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop confidence to speak up, even in difficult or high-pressure situations.
  • Learn about the concept of psychological safety and its importance in enabling individuals to voice their concerns without fear of negative consequences.

Programme Detail

Over the course of three days, this programme aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to lead, create, and sustain cultures that prioritise safety, care, and well-beingBy focusing on these critical aspects of leadership, this programme not only benefits individual leaders but also provides an opportunity for far-reaching impact on the entire organisation. It aligns with the growing recognition that fostering a culture of care and safety is not just a moral obligation but also a smart business decision, as it leads to greater productivity, better public perception, and a more satisfied and engaged workforce.  

 

Day 1 – Introduction to Safety Culture 

In these sessions, participants will explore the fundamental principles of safety culture within healthcare settings. The sessions will cover key elements such as leadership commitment, just and restorative culture, human factors, and continuous improvement. Participants will also learn about the historical context and lessons from notable healthcare failures, providing a clear rationale for prioritising safety in their own practices.

 

Day 2 – Creating the Foundations for Safe Cultures of Care 

In these sessions, participants will delve into the essential building blocks required to establish a robust safety culture within their working environments. Attendees will learn about core elements such as leadership role, building psychological safety, speaking up and raising concerns, and nurturing a culture of continuous learning. The sessions will highlight the importance of these components in fostering an environment where patient safety is prioritised and integrated into every aspect of care. By the end of the sessions, participants will have a clear understanding of how to lay the groundwork for a culture that supports and enhances safety at all levels of their organisation.

 

Day 3 – Implementing and Sustaining a Safety Culture

These sessions focus on the practical aspects of embedding and maintaining a safety culture within healthcare teams / organisations. Participants will learn effective strategies for translating theoretical concepts into actionable initiatives that drive sustained improvement. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities, attendees will explore the key steps involved in implementing safety practices, reframing failure, decision making and bias and overcoming common challenges. These sessions will also address the importance of ongoing evaluation and adaptation to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of safety initiatives.

Programme Supporting Structure

Throughout the three-days, interactive activities, using current case studies, and group discussions will foster engagement and ensure participants leave with actionable strategies for building and sustaining a safety culture in health and care.

Action Planning

  • Participants develop action plans tailored to their leadership roles.
  • Identify specific steps they will take to enhance safety culture within their teams and organizations.
  • Share plans, gather feedback, and refine strategies for implementing a strong safety culture.

Cost

The three-day residential programme costs £2,495 per delegate including full catering and two nights hotel accommodation.

Academy Member price, for anyone working at an Academy member organisation, is £2,395 per delegate

Places can be self-funded or funded by the employer (CPD budget).

Delegates will need to fund their own transportation to and from the event.

Next Programme Date

The next programme is taking place 31 March – 2 April 2025. It is a residential three-day programme, in the Blackfriars area of central London (hotel accommodation provided).

This programme is also available to commissions for a group booking for your workforce (min 20 people).  Dates and location can be set to suit your needs. Please email us to arrange a call to discuss.

Booking Process

To participate in the programme you must:

  • be a registered nurse or midwife with the NMC.
  • be practising in the UK.
  • be working at Agenda for Change Band 7 or above.

What you will need to demonstrate in your booking form:

  • How you will use the programme to work with others, learn from, and share experiences.
  • How you will use the experience to improve patient and health outcomes.
  • Your aspirations to develop as a leader.
  • Support from your line manager to enable you to attend this programme.

Upon booking, you are required to provide the following information:

  • Personal, employment and education information.
  • Senior sponsor information (your line manager) with authorisation to join the programme.

Please note before booking:

  • You need to complete the form in one sitting – if you close the page before submission then any data you have entered will be lost.
  • Bookings without line manager support will not be accepted.
  • Payment will be required before starting the programme.
