The Florence Nightingale Foundation and the Department of Health Northern Ireland are pleased to offer a leadership programme open to all nurses and midwives working in Northern Ireland at Band 8B and above, or other bands if you work and report directly to a Director in Northern Ireland.

The programme has been designed and will be delivered in line with the Department of Health Northern Ireland’s priorities to provide bespoke and innovative training to ensure the next generation of clinical leaders are accountable, confident, capable and equipped to lead their teams and services with compassion and inclusivity.

Objectives

  • Developing the confidence and capability required to positively influence as visible leaders at all levels.
  • Exploring communication approaches which enable a constructive presence, gravitas and wider impact.
  • Understanding collective authority, accountability and power to make a clear difference to workforce culture and patient safety.  
  • Understanding political influence both within and outside of the organisation.
  • Having a psychologically safe space to facilitate decision making, hold ambiguity and process tensions.
  • Developing understanding of quality improvement methodology for instigating, leading, embedding and measuring change within their local environments.   
  • Developing critical thinking attributes and a commitment to the value of evidence-based practice.

 

Successful candidates will be required to complete a proposal for a business case that supports learning from an incident or an event within their team/department/service, that will positively impact health outcomes.

Application Process

What you will need to demonstrate in your application form

  • Partnership: How you will use the programme to work with others, learn from, and share experiences. 
  • Leadership achievements: Discuss your leadership accomplishments and explain how receiving the programme will strengthen your leadership abilities and influence care delivery. Why is the programme right for you? 
  • Provide information on a business case that you will be submitting as part of the programme and outline how it will impact patients/service users, your department or team.    
  • Sustainability: How your project will impact sustainability This may be from a public health, environmental, financial and/or socially responsible perspective.  

All applicants must have documented support from their Nursing Director on application to be considered for this programme.

Cost

This programme is funded by the Department of Health Northern Ireland. This includes all taught days (with lunch provided for face to face days), and one night residential with overnight accommodation and, evening meal. Participants will need to fund their travel costs and any other related costs.
