Attempts to secure regular clinical supervision for nurses and midwives are longstanding. Despite this, a structure for sustained access to high-quality supervision is still far from a reality.
The Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF) Academy Membership highlighted this as a policy priority for FNF to take forward. As a result, FNF’s first Clinical Supervision Subject Expert Group (CS-SEG) was established comprising of national leaders in the field and representing all four countries of the UK.
The activity commenced with an RCN Students webinar in summer 2020, and following that CS-SEG was active in working with members to take this agenda forward.
Recognising that ‘one size does not fit all’, the CS-SEG agreed that their common purpose was not to redefine clinical supervision nor advocate for a preferred model. They valued the numerous initiatives occurring across the UK but defined their role as advocating for an underpinning structure, grounded in policy, which will enable nurses to consistently access a high-quality standard of clinical supervision in a sustained manner.
The SEG shared recommendations with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and influenced national groups such as the National Preceptorship Programme (England). Read more about the SEG achievements in the Nursing Times article here.
By 2023 the SEG had achieved the ‘vision 2022’ that the group had originally set out, and it evolved into a network to enable the masses of clinical supervision enthusiasts to connect and learn.
Network sessions are held virtually, approximately four times a year. Half the session is a learning opportunity in partnership with a partner/organisation/individual with something to share on clinical supervision, and half is an opportunity to network with other clinical supervision enthusiasts.
Participants can count the sessions as participatory CPD.
